Banksia integrifolia, commonly known as Coastal Banksia, is a hardy evergreen tree or large shrub native to eastern Australia. It features leathery, dark green leaves with silvery undersides and produces striking cylindrical yellow flower spikes from late summer into winter. These nectar-rich flowers attract birds and pollinators, adding seasonal interest and supporting local biodiversity.
Well-suited to coastal, native, and low-maintenance gardens, it also performs well as a windbreak, feature tree, or in mixed native plantings. Its salt and wind tolerance make it an excellent choice for exposed coastal sites.
Plant in full sun in free-draining soil. Tolerant of sandy and poor soils, it requires minimal watering once established. Allow 3–5 metres spacing depending on intended use and mature size.
Mature size: Typically reaches 5–15 metres tall with a broad, spreading canopy up to 5 metres wide.
Trimming: Light pruning after flowering helps maintain shape and encourages dense growth. Avoid hard pruning into old wood, as recovery may be slow. For hedge or screen use, trim annually to control size and promote bushiness.
Deadheading: Not essential, but spent flower spikes can be removed for tidiness, especially in landscaped settings.
Fertilising: Use a low-phosphorus, native plant fertiliser in early spring. Avoid standard fertilisers high in phosphorus, which can harm Proteaceae roots.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase (first 1–2 years). Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant, though occasional deep watering during extended dry spells supports flowering and health.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Occasionally, borers or scale insects may appear—treat with horticultural oil or prune out affected areas if necessary.
Disease Management: Susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils. Ensure excellent drainage and avoid overwatering. Yellowing leaves or sudden dieback may indicate Phytophthora root rot—remove affected plants and improve soil conditions if this occurs.
