A versatile and hardy groundcover, Baccharis pilularis Twin Peaks is a dense, low-growing native shrub known for its vibrant green foliage and excellent erosion control. This cultivar forms a spreading mat that hugs the ground, making it ideal for stabilising slopes and suppressing weeds. Its fine, glossy leaves remain fresh-looking year-round, and although it rarely flowers, it occasionally produces small, inconspicuous cream-coloured flowers in late summer.
Ideal for coastal, native, and low-maintenance gardens, it thrives in exposed areas and can handle both drought and salt-laden winds. Use it for large-scale groundcover, along banks, or to soften hard landscaping edges.
Best planted in full sun to light shade, in well-drained soil. Requires little watering once established. Space plants approximately 1.5 metres apart to allow for spreading.
Mature size: Forms a dense, spreading mat up to 1.5 metres wide and 30–60 cm high.
Trimming: Light trimming in late winter to early spring helps maintain shape and encourages dense growth. For groundcover use, trim to control spread and keep a tidy form.
Deadheading: Not required, as this variety is grown for its foliage and groundcover habit rather than its flowers.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. Avoid over-fertilising, as this plant thrives in lean soils.
Watering: Once established, 'Twin Peaks' is drought-tolerant, but regular watering during the establishment phase (first 1–2 seasons) is crucial. During prolonged dry spells, occasional deep watering is beneficial.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Monitor for aphids or scale insects in warmer months; treat infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if needed.
Disease Management: Low susceptibility to disease. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. Watch for signs of fungal issues such as wilting or blackened stems, and prune out affected parts promptly.
