Atriplex cinerea
Atriplex cinerea, commonly known as Coast Saltbush, is a hardy, silver-grey shrub native to coastal regions of New Zealand and Australia. Its dense, upright form and textured, salt-tolerant foliage make it ideal for coastal planting. Tiny, inconspicuous greenish flowers appear in Summer, followed by small seed clusters.
Perfect for coastal gardens, exposed sites, and native revegetation projects, Atriplex cinerea thrives in full sun with well-drained, sandy or poor soils. Highly wind- and salt-tolerant, it requires minimal watering once established. Space plants 1–1.5m apart for effective coverage and airflow.
Typically reaches 1–2m tall and 1.5–2.5m wide, forming a dense, spreading shrub with year-round silvery foliage.
Trimming: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain compact shape and prevent legginess. Remove any dead or damaged branches throughout the year.
Deadheading: Not necessary, as the flowers are small and not ornamental.
Fertilising: Typically not required in nutrient-poor soils, but a light application of balanced fertiliser in spring can support vigorous growth if needed.
Watering: Very drought-tolerant once established. Water during the establishment phase and in extended dry periods, especially in sandy soils. Avoid overwatering.
Pest Control: Rarely troubled by pests due to its tough, salty foliage. No routine treatment needed.
Disease Management: Highly resilient and disease-resistant. Ensure good drainage to avoid root rot in poorly drained soils. Remove any affected plant parts promptly if issues arise.
