Aronia melanocarpa, commonly known as black chokeberry, is a hardy deciduous shrub valued for its seasonal interest. Clusters of small white flowers appear in late spring, followed by glossy black berries in late summer that are attractive to birds and suitable for preserves. Its dark green foliage turns striking shades of red and purple in autumn. Ideal for wildlife plantings, and mixed borders, it grows well in full sun to partial shade with moist, well-drained soil. Space plants 1–1.5m apart to allow for natural spreading.
Mature Size: Typically reaches 1–2m high and 1.5–2m wide with a bushy, multi-stemmed habit.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and to shape the plant. Suckers can be removed at the base if a tidier, more compact form is desired.
Deadheading: Not necessary, as this plant is grown for both its spring flowers and autumn berries, which also attract birds.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth and berry production.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Aronia is drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during prolonged dry periods to maintain foliage health and berry yield.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Occasionally, aphids or leaf miners may appear—treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if infestations develop.
Disease Management: Aronia is relatively disease-resistant. However, it can occasionally develop leaf spot or powdery mildew in humid conditions. Improve air circulation, avoid overhead watering, and apply a fungicide if symptoms persist. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
