Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, commonly known as bearberry, is a prostrate, evergreen groundcover valued for its dense, trailing habit and leathery dark green leaves that often turn bronze in winter. In spring, it produces dainty, pale pink urn-shaped flowers followed by small, bright red berries that attract birds. This hardy, low-growing species is ideal for stabilising slopes and covering dry, exposed areas.
Excellent for rock gardens, coastal sites, and erosion control. Complements alpine, woodland, native, and low-maintenance garden styles.
Prefers full sun to light shade and thrives in well-drained, acidic to neutral soils with low to moderate fertility. Very drought-tolerant once established. Space plants 60–90 cm apart to encourage spreading coverage.
Mature size: Grows to 15–20 cm tall and can spread up to 1.5 metres wide, forming a dense, ground-hugging mat.
Trimming: Prune lightly in early spring to remove any dead or damaged stems and to maintain a tidy, spreading form. Avoid cutting into old wood, as it may not resprout. Minimal pruning is needed once established.
Deadheading: Not necessary, but you may remove spent flowers or berries for tidiness if desired.
Fertilising: Typically thrives without feeding in well-drained, acidic soils. If growth is poor, apply a light, low-phosphorus, acid-loving plant fertiliser in early spring. Avoid over-fertilising, which can harm the plant.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment (first 1–2 years). Once established, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is drought-tolerant and prefers dry to moderately moist soil. Avoid waterlogging.
Pest Control: Rarely affected by pests. Occasionally, aphids or scale may occur—treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Root rot can develop in poorly drained soils. Ensure excellent drainage and avoid overwatering. Maintain airflow by not crowding plants, and remove any dead material to reduce fungal risks.
