Abutilon megapotamicum, commonly known as trailing abutilon or flowering maple, is a graceful, semi-evergreen shrub or scrambling climber admired for its unique, lantern-like flowers. Blooming from spring through to autumn, the pendulous yellow petals and prominent red calyces create a striking contrast, while the slender, arching stems and small green leaves add a delicate texture. Typically grows 1.5-2.5 metres high and wide, making it ideal for training over supports or spilling from raised beds in cottage, subtropical, or informal garden styles.
Plant in full sun to partial shade with well-draining, fertile soil. Space at least 1-1.5 metres apart if planting in groups. Protect from frost and cold winds; in cooler regions, grow in containers and overwinter in a sheltered position. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to control size and encourage bushy growth. Mulch annually to retain moisture and improve soil quality.
Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a tidy shape and encourage bushier growth. In late winter or early spring, perform a harder cut-back to control size and remove any dead or damaged wood. It can also be lightly trained as a climber if desired.
Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flowers to encourage continuous flowering and keep the plant neat.
Fertilising: Feed every 4-6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser to support flowering and foliage growth. In containers, feeding may need to be more frequent.
Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry periods. Abutilon megapotamicum prefers evenly moist, well-drained soil. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely or become waterlogged.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, whiteflies, and spider mites, especially on new growth. Treat early with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues such as rust or leaf spot. Avoid overhead watering and remove any affected leaves promptly. Ensure well-drained soil to reduce the risk of root rot.
