Rosa banksiae Alba, also known as the White Banksia Rose, is a vigorous, thornless climbing rose prized for its cascading clusters of small, lightly fragrant white flowers in early to mid-spring. This fast-growing rambler produces a lush display of semi-evergreen foliage and is ideal for covering fences, walls, pergolas, or archways with minimal maintenance.
Ideal for cottage, romantic, and Mediterranean-style gardens, it offers a soft, timeless presence and can also be trained as a large shrub or groundcover on slopes and banks.
Prefers full sun and thrives in well-drained soil with moderate moisture. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and size. Allow ample space for its spreading habit and support for climbing growth.
Mature size: Can reach 4–6 metres high and spread up to 3–5 metres when supported or left to sprawl.
Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering in late spring to shape and control size. Remove dead, weak, or tangled growth, and train long canes as desired. Avoid hard pruning, as this rose flowers on old wood.
Deadheading: Not necessary, as it flowers once a year and does not repeat flower. However, removing spent blooms can tidy the plant's appearance.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced rose fertiliser in early spring before flowering, and again after flowering to support healthy foliage and growth. Mulching with compost or well-rotted manure helps retain moisture and improve soil.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant, though deep watering during extended dry spells will support vigour and flowering in the following season.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, but monitor for aphids in spring. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or a strong jet of water.
Disease Management: Highly disease-resistant, especially to black spot and mildew. Ensure good air circulation by avoiding overcrowding, and remove any affected foliage promptly if issues arise.
