Pseudopanax Cyril Watson

Pseudopanax lessonii Cyril Watson is a distinctive, evergreen native plant with chunky, five-fingered leaves. Its upright form and multi-branched structure add to its appeal.

It performs well in a range of well-drained soil types, from sandy to clay and is adaptable to both acidic and alkaline conditions. It prefers full sun to partial shade and, once established, it is quite drought tolerant. Cyril Watson also has a strong resistance to most common pests and diseases.

Thanks to its vibrant leaves and robust growth habit, it makes a stunning specimen plant, adding visual interest to any corner of your garden. It can also be used in a mixed border, as part of an informal hedge or as a revegetation plant.

Upon reaching maturity, Cyril Watson can attain a height of approximately 3-4 metres. Its moderate growth rate enables easy management of height and shape based on your garden's needs.

Trimming: Trim Pseudopanax 'Cyril Watson' in early spring to remove any dead or damaged leaves and branches. Lightly prune to maintain its shape and encourage healthy new growth. This plant generally requires minimal pruning.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy growth. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to excessive leaf growth and potentially weaken the plant.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase to ensure the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once established, Pseudopanax 'Cyril Watson' is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, but monitor for common pests such as aphids and scale insects. Treat any infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regularly inspect the plant for early signs of pest activity.

Disease Management: Pseudopanax 'Cyril Watson' is typically disease-resistant. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal issues. Avoid waterlogging by ensuring the soil is well-draining. If you notice signs of fungal diseases, such as leaf spots or mildew, remove the affected parts and treat with a suitable fungicide if necessary.
