Notify MeVerbena Superbena Royale Romance is a compact, trailing perennial often grown as an annual, prized for its intense deep red flower clusters that bloom profusely from spring through to autumn. With excellent mildew resistance and a self-cleaning habit, it delivers season-long colour with minimal care. Reaching around 15-25 cm high and trailing or spreading up to 45-60 cm wide, it’s ideal for hanging baskets, containers, and garden borders in cottage, coastal, and contemporary garden styles.
Thrives in full sun with well-draining soil. Space plants 30-40 cm apart for healthy spread and airflow. Drought-tolerant once established and requires no deadheading, though light trimming can refresh growth. Feed regularly for best performance and protect from frost in cooler regions.
Trimming: Lightly trim or pinch back stems to encourage a bushy, compact habit and continuous flowering. If growth becomes leggy mid-season, cut back by one-third to rejuvenate and promote new blooms.
Deadheading: Not necessary, as this variety is self-cleaning. However, occasional removal of spent blooms can improve appearance.
Fertilising: Feed every 1-2 weeks during the growing season with a high-potassium liquid fertiliser (e.g. tomato feed) to support vigorous flowering, especially in containers and baskets.
Watering: Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once established, it's moderately drought-tolerant but performs best with consistent moisture, particularly in hot, dry weather.
Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies. Treat early with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
Disease Management: Ensure good airflow to prevent powdery mildew and other fungal issues. Avoid overhead watering and remove any affected foliage promptly. Use well-drained soil to reduce the risk of root rot.
