Verbena bonariensis, commonly known as Purpletop Vervain, is a tall perennial with airy, branching stems topped by clusters of lavender-purple flowers from midsummer to autumn. These delicate flowers appear to float above fine foliage, adding elegance and movement to the garden. Loved by pollinators, it is drought-tolerant and easy to grow, providing height without bulk.

Ideal for cottage, prairie, and contemporary gardens, it blends seamlessly with grasses and perennials, softens borders, and enhances wildlife-friendly spaces. Its long flowering season and light structure suit meadow-style plantings or as a backdrop.

Thriving in full sun with well-drained soil, it tolerates drought once established but benefits from watering in dry spells. Deadheading prolongs flowering, and plants self-seed in milder areas. Space 40–60 cm apart for best effect.

Mature plants reach 120–150 cm tall and 45–60 cm wide, offering a graceful, vertical presence in sunny settings.

Trimming: Cut back stems to ground level in late winter or early spring to promote fresh growth. During the growing season, trim any overly long or leggy stems to maintain a tidy appearance.

Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flowers to prolong flowering and prevent excessive self-seeding if undesired. However, leaving some seed heads can provide winter interest and food for birds.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to support vigorous growth and flowering. Avoid over-fertilising, as this plant thrives in moderately fertile soil.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, but watch for aphids or spider mites. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.

Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation to prevent powdery mildew or other fungal diseases. Plant in well-drained soil and avoid waterlogging to minimise root rot risk.
