Tigridia hybrids

Tigridia pavonia hybrids, commonly known as Tiger Flowers or Mexican Shell Flowers, are exotic-looking summer-flowering bulbs celebrated for their bold, vibrant blooms. Each flower features striking, intricately patterned centres in shades of yellow, red, orange, pink, and white, resembling the spots of a tiger. The flowers are short-lived, lasting just one day, but multiple blooms appear sequentially on each stem, providing weeks of dazzling colour in the garden. The upright, sword-shaped green foliage adds a lush, tropical touch, complementing the flamboyant flowers.
Tigridia hybrids are perfect for adding drama to borders, cottage gardens, or tropical-themed plantings. Their vibrant, eye-catching flowers make them excellent for creating focal points in sunny spaces. They work beautifully in containers, where their blooms can be appreciated up close. Pair them with complementary summer-flowering bulbs like lilies, gladioli, or dahlias for a show-stopping display. Tigridia is also a great choice for cutting gardens, as its unique flowers make stunning additions to floral arrangements.
Tigridia hybrids thrive in full sun and well-drained soil, including sandy or loamy conditions. While they require regular watering during the growing season, particularly in dry spells, they prefer drier conditions once the foliage begins to die back. To protect the bulbs from frost, lift and store them in cooler climates or treat them as annuals.
Space plants 15–20 cm apart to create a dense, colourful display while allowing room for healthy growth.
At maturity, Tigridia hybrids grow to a height of 40–60 cm, with a spread of approximately 15–20 cm. Their unique, vividly patterned blooms and upright foliage create a bold and exotic feature in summer gardens.
