Spirea cantoniensis

Spiraea cantoniensis is a deciduous shrub admired for its graceful, arching branches and abundant clusters of pure white, double flowers that cover the plant in mid to late Spring. Commonly known as May Bush, it creates a cascading effect when in full flower and provides a soft, romantic look in garden settings.

Ideal for cottage, formal, or mixed borders, Spiraea cantoniensis is perfect for feature planting, informal hedging, or mass planting. It thrives in full sun to light shade with free-draining soil and benefits from light pruning after flowering to maintain its shape. Space approximately 1-1.2 metres apart when used as a hedge.

Forms a broad, arching shrub approximately 1.5-2 metres high and wide.

Trimming: Prune immediately after flowering to maintain shape and encourage a flush of new growth for next season's flowers. Remove old, woody stems at the base every few years to rejuvenate the plant.

Deadheading: Not essential, as the plant naturally sheds spent flowers, but removing spent clusters can improve appearance.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth and flowering. In poor soils, a light second feed after flowering can be beneficial.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Spiraea cantoniensis is moderately drought tolerant but will perform best with deep watering during prolonged dry spells, particularly in summer.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Occasionally susceptible to aphids or spider mites-treat with insecticidal soap if necessary.

Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease. To reduce risk of fungal issues, ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering. Remove and dispose of any diseased foliage promptly.
