Scabiosa Fama White

Scabiosa caucasica Fama White, commonly known as Pincushion Flower, is a graceful perennial distinguished by its large, pure white, ruffled flowers. Floweing from late spring through early autumn, these delicate flowers sit atop slender, upright stems, swaying elegantly in the breeze. The Pincushion-like flowers, with their intricate petal arrangement and soft texture, are a magnet for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

Ideal for mixed borders, cut flower gardens, and cottage-style plantings. Combine it with soft pastels or vibrant colours in sunny borders to create a dynamic planting scheme. Thives in full sun and prefers well-drained soil, making it suitable for sandy or loamy conditions. It is drought-tolerant once established, though it appreciates regular watering during prolonged dry spells. Deadheading spent flowers encourages prolonged flowering and keeps the plant looking tidy. Avoid planting in waterlogged soils.

Space plants 30–40 cm apart to allow for their upright habit and prevent overcrowding in borders or beds. Reaches a height of 50–70 cm and spreads approximately 30–40 cm.

Trimming: Cut back flower stems after the first flush of blooms to encourage a second flowering. In late autumn, trim the plant back to basal foliage to prepare it for winter.

Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flowers to prolong the flowering period and maintain a neat appearance.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring and again mid-season to promote healthy growth and abundant flowering. Avoid over-fertilising to prevent excessive leaf growth.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and during dry periods. Once established, allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings, as Scabiosa prefers well-drained soil.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free but occasionally susceptible to aphids. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or remove pests manually.
Disease Management: Ensure good drainage and adequate air circulation to prevent powdery mildew or root rot. Remove any diseased foliage promptly to maintain plant health.
