Salvia Rockin Deep Purple
Notify MeSalvia 'Rockin Deep Purple' is a vigorous, long-flowering perennial known for its deep violet-purple flowers held on dark stems above aromatic green foliage. Flowering continuously from late spring through to autumn, it attracts bees, butterflies, and tūī, making it a standout for pollinator-friendly planting. Reaching 90 to 100 cm high and 70 to 80 cm wide, it is ideal for cottage, contemporary, wildlife, and low-maintenance garden styles.
Plant in full sun with free-draining soil. Drought-tolerant once established and well suited to hot, dry conditions. Space plants 60 to 70 cm apart to allow for airflow and mature spread. Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering and prune back in late autumn or early spring to maintain a compact shape. A striking, low-maintenance salvia that delivers bold colour and wildlife value over a long season.
Trimming: Lightly trim after each flush of flowers to encourage repeat flowering and maintain a compact, bushy shape. In late autumn or early spring, cut back by about one-third to remove old growth and stimulate fresh shoots.
Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flower spikes to prolong flowering and keep the plant looking tidy.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In containers or nutrient-poor soils, use a liquid feed every 4-6 weeks during the growing season to support continuous flowering.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Salvia ‘Rockin’ Deep Purple’ is moderately drought-tolerant but performs best with consistent moisture. Ensure well-drained soil to prevent root rot.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Watch for aphids or whiteflies in warm, sheltered conditions-treat early with neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Provide good airflow and avoid overhead watering to minimise fungal issues such as powdery mildew. Remove any yellowing or diseased foliage promptly. Cut back in autumn to reduce overwintering disease risks.
