Rhodohypoxis Dawn White
Notify MeRhodohypoxis Dawn White is a low-growing, clump-forming perennial prized for its crisp white, star-shaped flowers that appear in abundance from late spring through to early autumn. Set against a backdrop of fine, grass-like green foliage, the flowers create a clean, bright display ideal for rockeries, pots, or the front of sunny borders. Reaching just 10-15 cm high and spreading to about 20 cm wide, it suits alpine, cottage, and container garden styles.
Thrives in full sun with free-draining, gritty or loamy soil. Space plants 15-20 cm apart to allow for gentle spreading. Requires consistent moisture during the growing season but must be kept dry during dormancy in winter. Excellent in troughs or raised beds where drainage can be controlled.
Trimming: Remove yellowing foliage and spent flower stems as they appear to maintain a tidy plant and redirect energy into tuber development.
Deadheading: Regular deadheading encourages prolonged flowering and keeps the plant looking neat.
Fertilising: Feed fortnightly during the growing and flowering season with a high-potassium liquid fertiliser to support strong blooms.
Watering: Water regularly during the growing period, keeping the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Reduce watering once the foliage begins to die back after flowering.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids and thrips, which can distort flowers and foliage. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil as needed.
Disease Management: Ensure good drainage to prevent tuber rot. Avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of powdery mildew or botrytis; remove any affected leaves promptly and maintain good air circulation.
