These nodding flowers, adorned with golden-yellow stamens, rise above a mound of finely divided, feathery foliage. Its soft foliage provides texture, while the flowers add bold colour to spring displays. Following the flowering period, attractive, silky seed heads develop, adding ornamental interest well into summer.
This hardy plant is low-maintenance and drought-tolerant. Perfect for rockeries, borders, and alpine gardens. It pairs beautifully with other early flowerers like daffodils and tulips or with low-growing perennials such as aubrieta and phlox. Attracts bees and other pollinators. This plant thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soil, particularly sandy or loamy types. It tolerates poorer soils and dry conditions once established, making it suitable for gravel or xeriscaped gardens. Avoid heavy or waterlogged soils to maintain healthy growth.
Space plants approximately 20–30 cm apart. At maturity, Red Bells forms a neat mound, reaching about 15–20 cm in height and spreading to approximately 20–30 cm.
Trimming: Cut back old flower stems and foliage after flowering to encourage fresh growth and a tidy appearance. Leave some seed heads if their ornamental value is desired.
Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flowers to prolong the flowering season and prevent excessive self-seeding.
Fertilising: Apply a light dressing of balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support growth and flowering. Pulsatilla thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soil and does not require heavy feeding.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and during prolonged dry spells. Mature plants are drought-tolerant and prefer well-drained soil. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free but occasionally watch for slugs or snails, which may damage young foliage. Use traps or organic deterrents if necessary.
Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease. Ensure well-drained soil and good air circulation to prevent fungal issues. Remove any affected foliage promptly.
