Phlomis russeliana

Phlomis russeliana, commonly known as Jerusalem Sage, is a perennial favourite for its architectural form. This plant features sturdy, upright stems adorned with whorls of vibrant yellow flowers, flowering in succession from the bottom up. The heart-shaped, sage-green leaves add a lush, textured backdrop.

Phlomis russeliana is a versatile plant that fits seamlessly into various garden styles. Its bold structure and striking flowers are ideal for Mediterranean gardens, cottage-style landscapes, and contemporary urban settings. Its resilience and distinctive appearance make it a fantastic choice for creating focal points or adding texture to borders.

Reaches an impressive height of approximately 90-100 cm and spreads to around 50-60 cm. When planting, ensure a spacing of at least 60 cm between each plant or up to 1.2m apart to allow for ample growth and air circulation. This spacing will enable your Turkish Sage to thrive and display its unique flowers and foliage to their fullest potential.

Trimming
Trim back old stems in late winter or early spring to refresh the plant and encourage tidy new growth. You can also remove faded flowering stems in late summer if you prefer a neater appearance. Avoid cutting hard into old woody growth.

Deadheading
Deadheading is optional, but removing spent flowering stems will keep the plant looking tidy and may encourage a longer flowering period.

Fertilising
Fertilising is usually only needed lightly. A spring dressing of compost is generally enough, as overly rich feeding can produce softer, weaker growth.

Watering
Water regularly while the plant is establishing. Once established, Phlomis russeliana is quite drought tolerant and generally only needs additional watering during extended dry periods.

Pest Control
Pest issues are uncommon, though young growth can occasionally attract aphids, slugs, or snails. Check plants regularly and treat early with hand removal, barriers, or insecticidal soap if needed.

Disease Management
Disease problems are usually limited, but root rot can occur in poorly drained or winter-wet soil. Powdery mildew may also appear in crowded or dry conditions, so ensure good airflow and avoid overwatering.
