Notify MeElsa Sass is an exceptional herbaceous peony celebrated for its large, fully double white flowers with a subtle ivory tint and a soft, romantic fragrance. Flowering in early to mid-summer, the perfectly formed flowers sit elegantly above strong, upright stems and dark green foliage, creating a refined and timeless garden display.
Ideal for cottage, formal, and cut-flower gardens, Elsa Sass is perfect for borders, feature planting, or seasonal focal points. It thrives in full sun to light shade with fertile, free-draining soil and benefits from a cool winter period to promote strong flowering. Space approximately 80 cm to 1 metre apart for mature plantings.
Forms a rounded, bushy plant reaching around 80 to 90 cm high and 70 to 90 cm wide.
Trimming: Cut back spent flower stems to just above a healthy leaf to keep the plant tidy. In late autumn, once the foliage has died back naturally, cut all stems to ground level and remove debris to help prevent disease.
Deadheading: Recommended. Remove spent flowers promptly to maintain a neat appearance and direct energy into root and bud development rather than seed production.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring as new shoots emerge. A second application after flowering will support strong root growth and next season’s flower production.
Watering: Water deeply and consistently during dry spells, especially while the plant is actively growing and flowering. Peonies prefer moist, well-drained soil. Avoid overwatering and waterlogged conditions.
Pest Control: Usually pest-free. Check occasionally for aphids or thrips on young growth and flower heads. Treat with insecticidal soap if required.
Disease Management: Susceptible to botrytis blight in wet or humid conditions. Remove and dispose of any affected stems or leaves. Provide good airflow, avoid overhead watering, and clear away dead foliage in autumn to reduce fungal risk.
