Nierembergia repens
Notify MeNierembergia repens, commonly known as white cupflower or creeping cupflower, is a low-growing, mat-forming perennial valued for its delicate, cup-shaped white flowers with soft yellow centres that appear from late spring through to autumn. Its fine, bright green foliage forms a dense ground cover, making it ideal for edging, between pavers, or cascading from walls and containers. Reaching just 5-10 cm high and spreading up to 60 cm wide, it’s perfect for cottage, Mediterranean, and rock garden styles.
Thrives in full sun to light shade with well-draining soil. Space plants 25-30 cm apart to encourage even coverage. Drought-tolerant once established but benefits from occasional watering in dry periods. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain a tidy habit. Suitable for both garden beds and containers where soft, spreading growth is desired.
Trimming: Lightly trim after flowering to maintain a neat, low-growing shape and encourage fresh growth. Cut back any leggy or sprawling stems to keep the plant compact.
Deadheading: Regular deadheading will prolong the flowering season and keep the plant looking tidy.
Fertilising: Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser to support healthy growth and continuous flowering, especially in poor soils or containers.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and throughout dry spells. Nierembergia repens prefers moist but well-drained soil-avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely or become waterlogged.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though aphids or whiteflies may occasionally appear. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
Disease Management: Ensure good drainage and air circulation to prevent fungal issues. Avoid overhead watering and remove any yellowing or diseased foliage promptly to maintain plant health.
