Lobelia cardinalis

Lobelia cardinalis is a bold herbaceous perennial known for its vivid red flower spikes that appear from late summer into early autumn. Rising above fresh green foliage, the nectar-rich flowers attract bees and tūī, while the leaves may develop bronze or purple tones in cooler weather for added interest.

Ideal for damp borders, pond edges, rain gardens, and subtropical or cottage-style plantings, it thrives in full sun to partial shade with rich, consistently moist soil. Protect from strong winds and avoid drying out. Space plants 30 to 45 cm apart. Grows to 60–90 cm tall, forming a narrow, upright clump with a strong vertical presence.

Trimming: Cut back spent flower stems after flowering to encourage a tidy form and potential rebloom. In late autumn, trim the plant down to ground level as it enters dormancy.

Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flowers during the flowering season to prolong display and reduce self-seeding.

Fertilising: Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during the growing season to support vigorous growth and flowering.

Watering: Requires consistently moist soil—ideal for damp borders or pond edges. Do not allow soil to dry out, especially during hot or dry spells.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though slugs may feed on young shoots—apply slug bait or use physical barriers if needed.

Disease Management: Root rot may occur in poorly drained soils. Ensure soil remains moist but not waterlogged, and improve drainage if signs of rot appear (e.g. wilting despite moist soil).
