Lavender 'Meerlo' is a striking, evergreen shrub known for its aromatic foliage and unique variegated leaves-silvery green with creamy-yellow edges-that provide year-round visual interest. In late spring to early summer, it produces soft lavender-blue flower spikes that attract bees and other pollinators. With a dense, upright habit reaching around 80-100 cm high and wide, it’s ideal for borders, low hedging, and containers in Mediterranean, cottage, or coastal garden styles.
Plant in full sun with free-draining soil. Highly drought- and heat-tolerant once established. Space plants 60-80 cm apart to allow airflow and natural shape. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a compact form and encourage fresh growth. Avoid heavy or waterlogged soils, especially in winter. An eye-catching, low-maintenance lavender with both ornamental and fragrant appeal.
Trimming: Lightly trim after each flowering flush to maintain a neat, compact shape and encourage repeat flowering. In late summer or early autumn, give a harder prune-cut back by about one-third, avoiding cuts into old, woody stems that won’t reshoot.
Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flower spikes to promote extended flowering and keep the plant tidy.
Fertilising: Feed sparingly. Apply a light dose of balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring if needed. Over-fertilising can reduce essential oil content and make growth too soft.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Lavender ‘Meerlo’ is highly drought-tolerant and prefers dry, well-drained soil. Avoid waterlogging and overhead watering.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, though watch for spittlebugs or aphids. Treat infestations early with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Disease Management: Ensure full sun and excellent air circulation to prevent fungal issues like root rot and leaf spot. Avoid humid, poorly drained conditions. Remove any affected growth promptly and mulch lightly, keeping it clear of the crown.
