Kniphofia caulescens is a bold, clump-forming perennial known for its striking flower spikes and architectural form. From late summer into autumn, it produces tall, torch-like flowers in shades of coral-red to orange, maturing to yellow at the base. These eye-catching spikes rise above broad, blue-grey strap-like leaves that form a strong, structural clump. Typically reaches 1 to 1.2 metres high when in flower and 60 to 80 cm wide, making it ideal for gravel, prairie, coastal and contemporary garden styles.
Plant in full sun with free-draining soil, including poor or sandy types. Tolerates drought, wind and coastal exposure once established. Space plants 60 to 70 cm apart for airflow and visual impact. Cut back old flower stems after flowering and remove spent or damaged foliage in early spring. A striking, low-maintenance perennial that attracts birds and pollinators while adding height and colour to sunny garden spaces.
Trimming: Remove spent flower spikes after flowering to encourage a tidy appearance and potential repeat flowering. In late winter or early spring, cut back any old or damaged foliage to allow fresh new growth.
Deadheading: Regularly deadhead by cutting spent flowers at the base of the stalk to promote continued flowering and reduce self-seeding.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. In poor soils, a mid-season liquid feed may help prolong flowering and maintain vigour.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Kniphofia caulescens is drought-tolerant but will benefit from deep watering during extended dry periods. Prefers free-draining soil to avoid crown or root rot.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally, aphids may appear on flower spikes - treat early with insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal issues like leaf spot or crown rot. Remove any dead or diseased foliage promptly. Plant in well-drained soil to maintain long-term health.
