Hosta Loyalist is a striking, clump-forming perennial grown for its heavily-textured leaves with pure-white centres and very dark-green margins.. The flashy high-contrast foliage brings instant lift to shaded areas, and in Summer it produces stems of pale lavender flowers held above the leaves for a soft seasonal touch.
It’s ideal for brightening woodland-style borders, underplanting beneath shrubs and trees, or edging shaded paths where its foliage can be enjoyed up close. It also performs well in containers, especially when paired with darker-leaved shade plants for contrast.
Plant in part shade to shade, with morning sun best to maintain leaf colour while avoiding hot afternoon sun that can scorch the white centres. Grow in fertile, humus-rich soil that stays evenly moist but drains well, and water regularly through Summer; a mulch layer helps keep roots cool. Space plants about 70-90 cm apart to allow broad clumps to develop with good airflow.
Mature size is typically around 50-70 cm tall (to 80-100 cm in flower) and 90-120 cm wide, forming a large, rounded clump.
Trimming: Remove torn, wind-damaged or scorched leaves as needed through the season to keep the clump tidy and improve airflow. In late autumn/winter once foliage yellows and collapses, cut all leaves off at ground level and clear away debris.
Deadheading: After flowering, cut spent flower stems down at the base to keep the plant looking neat and direct energy back into foliage growth.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring as shoots emerge with compost and/or a balanced slow-release fertiliser. A light top-up in late spring helps maintain strong growth, especially in containers or lighter soils. Avoid heavy nitrogen feeding that can make leaves soft and more attractive to pests.
Watering: Keep evenly moist during establishment and throughout spring–summer. Water deeply during dry spells and heatwaves as drying out commonly causes browned edges and reduced vigour. Mulch to conserve moisture and keep roots cool.
Pest control: Slugs and snails are the main issue (holes, shredded new shoots, slime trails). Use iron-based slug bait, traps, hand-picking at dusk, and keep mulch pulled back from the crown in peak season. Check for aphids on new growth and flower stems; hose off or use insecticidal soap if required.
Disease management:
Crown/root rot: Wilting/collapse with a soft, mushy crown (often from poor drainage). Improve drainage, avoid burying the crown, and remove affected parts; discard severely rotted plants.
Leaf spot: Brown/black spots that can merge in humid conditions. Remove affected leaves, water at soil level, and improve airflow; use a suitable fungicide if persistent.
Hosta virus (HVX): Mottling/“ink-bleed” patterns and distortion. No cure - remove and bin the plant and disinfect tools to prevent spread.
