Hosta Kiwi Skyscraper
Hosta Kiwi Skyscraper is a striking, tall-growing perennial known for its upright habit and large, blue-green leaves with prominent veining. In mid to late summer, it sends up tall spikes of pale lavender flowers, adding vertical interest above the bold foliage. Reaching up to 90-100 cm high and 70-90 cm wide, it brings strong structure and texture to woodland, shaded borders, and large container plantings.
Best grown in partial to full shade with moist, humus-rich, well-draining soil. Space plants 70-90 cm apart to allow for mature spread and airflow. Mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Protect from slugs and snails, particularly in spring. A low-maintenance choice for adding height and drama to shaded garden areas.
Trimming: Remove flower stalks once flowering is finished to tidy the plant. In late autumn, cut back all dead or dying foliage to ground level as the plant enters dormancy.
Deadheading: Not essential, but removing spent blooms will improve appearance and may reduce unwanted self-seeding.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. In poor soils, a second feed in mid-summer will support strong foliage growth and overall vigour.
Watering: Water deeply and consistently, especially during dry spells. Hosta ‘Kiwi Skyscraper’ thrives in moist, well-drained soil. Apply mulch annually to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
Pest Control: Highly attractive to slugs and snails-use organic pellets, copper barriers, or traps to prevent leaf damage.
Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal diseases such as crown rot or leaf spot. Remove any diseased or damaged foliage promptly and ensure soil is well-drained.
