Geranium maderense

Geranium maderense is a bold, architectural perennial with huge, deeply lobed leaves and dramatic heads of bright magenta-pink flowers held above the foliage from late spring into summer. The thick, trunk-like stems and oversized foliage create instant impact, making it a standout feature in warmer, sheltered parts of the garden.

Perfect for subtropical, Mediterranean, or contemporary garden styles, Geranium maderense thrives in full sun to light shade in well-drained soil. It prefers a sheltered position away from heavy frost and cold winds, and benefits from consistent moisture through the warmer months while still avoiding waterlogged ground. Space plants 1.2-1.5 m apart to allow room for the large leaves to spread.

Mature size: Reaches around 1-1.5 m in height and 1.5-2 m in width, forming a large, sculptural clump.

Trimming: Remove spent flower stems and any damaged or untidy foliage to keep the plant neat. After flowering, the entire plant may begin to decline, as it is usually monocarpic (dying after flowering), but it may self-seed if left undisturbed.

Deadheading: Remove spent flower heads if you wish to prevent self-seeding. Otherwise, leave them in place to allow natural reseeding.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring as growth begins. In poor soils, a light liquid feed every four to six weeks during the growing season will support flowering.

Watering: Water regularly during active growth and flowering. Keep the soil evenly moist but well drained, avoiding both drought and waterlogging.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally monitor for slugs and snails, particularly in damp conditions, and use bait or barriers if needed.

Disease Management: Ensure good airflow and avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal leaf spots. Remove any yellowing or diseased foliage promptly and grow in well-drained soil to reduce the risk of crown rot.
