Filipendula palmata Rubra
Filipendula palmata 'Rubra' is a bold, clump-forming perennial admired for its tall, airy plumes of deep pink flowers that appear in early to mid-summer above deeply cut, dark green to bronze-tinged foliage. The fluffy flower heads add height, texture, and vibrant colour to damp borders and naturalistic plantings. Growing to around 1-1.2 metres high and 60-80 cm wide, it suits cottage, woodland, and moisture-loving garden styles.
Plant in full sun to partial shade with moist, humus-rich, free-draining soil. Prefers consistently damp conditions, making it ideal for pond edges or heavy soils that retain moisture. Space plants 60-70 cm apart to accommodate mature growth and airflow. Cut back after flowering to tidy and promote strong foliage. Mulch annually to conserve soil moisture and enrich the soil. A pollinator-friendly choice that brings bold colour and structure to moist garden areas.
Trimming: Cut back flower stems after flowering to maintain a tidy appearance and reduce self-seeding. In late autumn or early winter, remove all top growth to ground level once the foliage has fully died back.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poor soils, a mid-season liquid feed can support strong growth and flowering.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Monitor for aphids on young growth and treat early with insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation to prevent powdery mildew or leaf spot. Avoid overhead watering and promptly remove any diseased or yellowing foliage. Plant in soil that drains well but retains moisture to keep roots healthy.
