Eriogonum fasciculatum

Eriogonum fasciculatum, commonly known as California buckwheat, is a hardy evergreen shrub native to the western United States. This plant is celebrated for its clusters of tiny, white to pale pink flowers that appear from late spring through summer, gradually turning rust-coloured as they age, adding seasonal interest to the garden. The narrow, dark green leaves are densely packed, providing a striking contrast to the delicate flowers.

In the garden, Eriogonum fasciculatum is an excellent choice for rock gardens, xeriscapes, and native plant gardens. Its drought tolerance makes it ideal for dry, sunny areas where it can thrive with minimal water. It prefers well-drained soil and can handle poor, rocky conditions, making it versatile and easy to maintain. Space plants about 1 to 1.5 metres apart to allow for their natural spreading habit.

Eriogonum fasciculatum typically grows to a mature height of 0.5 to 1.5 metres with a similar spread, forming a dense, mounding shape. Its long flowering period and attractive foliage provide year-round interest, while its ability to attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies makes it a valuable addition to any wildlife-friendly garden.

Trimming: Trim Eriogonum fasciculatum (California Buckwheat) lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain its shape and remove any dead or damaged branches. Avoid heavy pruning, as this can stress the plant.

Fertilising: Fertilise sparingly, if at all. Eriogonum fasciculatum thrives in poor soils and typically does not require additional fertiliser. If necessary, use a low-nitrogen, slow-release fertiliser in early spring.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Eriogonum fasciculatum is highly drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering. During prolonged dry periods, occasional deep watering can help maintain its health.

Pest Control: Eriogonum fasciculatum is generally pest-resistant. However, monitor for signs of aphids or spider mites and treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.

Disease Management: This plant is typically disease-resistant but can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils. Ensure the plant is in well-drained soil to prevent this issue. Remove any affected plant parts if disease occurs and improve soil drainage conditions.
