Echinacea purpurea

Echinacea purpurea, commonly known as Purple Coneflower, is a robust perennial admired for its striking, daisy-like flowers with purple-pink petals and prominent, spiky orange-brown centres. These flowers appear from late spring through autumn, attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Additionally, the seed heads provide winter interest and food for birds, enhancing its value in wildlife gardens.

Perfect for cottage gardens, prairie-style plantings, and perennial borders. Its flowers are excellent for cutting, making it a favourite for fresh and dried floral arrangements. This hardy plant thrives in full sun and well-drained soil with moderate moisture, and it is drought-tolerant once established.

At maturity, Echinacea purpurea reaches a height of approximately 90cm-1.2m and a spread of about 45-60cm. For optimal growth and a beautiful display, space the plants about 45-60cm apart.

Trimming: Cut back stems to ground level in late autumn after flowering has finished. In early spring, trim any remaining dead stems to encourage fresh growth.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Echinacea purpurea thrives in moderately fertile soil, so avoid over-fertilising to prevent excessive leafy growth.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and during extended dry periods. Once established, Echinacea purpurea is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering. Ensure the soil is well-draining to prevent root rot.

Pest Control: Monitor for common pests such as aphids, Japanese beetles, and caterpillars. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Larger pests can be removed by hand if practical.

Disease Management: Watch for signs of powdery mildew, leaf spot, and aster yellows. Ensure good air circulation by spacing plants adequately and avoiding overhead watering. Remove and dispose of any diseased plant parts promptly. Apply appropriate fungicides if necessary.
