Dicentra eximia Alba

Dicentra eximia 'Alba' is a compact, clump-forming perennial known for its graceful, pure white, heart-shaped flowers that appear from late spring into early autumn. The finely divided, soft green foliage forms a tidy mound and remains attractive throughout the growing season. Unlike traditional bleeding hearts, this variety has a long flowering period and a more compact habit, typically reaching 30 to 40 cm high and wide. It suits woodland, cottage, shaded border, and low-maintenance garden styles.

Plant in partial to full shade with moist, free-draining, humus-rich soil. Space plants 30 to 40 cm apart to allow for airflow and mature spread. Cut back spent flower stems to prolong flowering and tidy the plant. A reliable, long-flowering perennial that brings soft colour and texture to shaded garden areas.

Trimming: Remove spent flower stems regularly to encourage continuous flowering. In late autumn, cut back old foliage as it begins to die down, or tidy in early spring before new growth emerges.

Deadheading: Deadhead faded blooms throughout the flowering season to prolong display and reduce self-seeding.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poor soils, a light mid-season liquid feed can help maintain vigour and support repeat flowering.

Watering: Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in spring and early summer. Dicentra eximia ‘Alba’ prefers moist, well-drained soil and will tolerate short dry spells once established. Avoid waterlogged conditions.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though slugs and snails may feed on young growth-use organic slug deterrents as needed.

Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues like powdery mildew. Remove any yellowing or diseased foliage promptly, and plant in soil that drains freely but retains moisture. Mulch in spring to conserve soil moisture.
