The Clivia miniata, also known as the Kaffir Lily, is a low-growing, herbaceous plant distinguished by its deep-green, exceptionally broad leaves. From winter to spring, this plant produces large clusters of agapanthus-like flowers in a vibrant shade of orange, offering a brilliant contrast to its lush green foliage. Due to its preference for lower light conditions, it thrives best in shaded areas. At maturity, the Kaffir Lily typically achieves a height of 40-50 cm and a similar spread.
Trimming: Trim away yellow, damaged, or old leaves at the base to keep Clivia miniata tidy. Avoid cutting healthy leaves unnecessarily, as the foliage helps support strong flowering.
Deadheading: Remove spent flower heads once flowering has finished to improve appearance and prevent the plant putting energy into seed production. Cut the finished flower stem down near the base once it begins to dry.
Fertilising: Feed in spring and summer with a balanced slow-release fertiliser or a liquid fertiliser suitable for flowering plants. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can encourage lush foliage with fewer flowers.
Watering: Water regularly while establishing, keeping the soil lightly moist but never waterlogged. Once established, Clivia miniata prefers drier conditions between watering and should only need extra water during extended dry periods or extreme heat.
Pest Control: Check for mealybugs, scale, and snails, especially around the leaf bases and under foliage. Treat insects with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap, and remove snails by hand or use suitable bait where needed.
Disease Management: Watch for root rot, crown rot, or leaf spot, particularly in damp, poorly drained conditions. Signs include yellowing leaves, soft or mushy growth at the base, brown spotting, or sudden wilting. Remove affected foliage, improve drainage and airflow, and avoid watering into the crown.
