Cardiocrinum giganteum

Cardiocrinum giganteum is an awe-inspiring Himalayan lily known for its towering flower spike and exotic allure. It begins with a rosette of broad, glossy, heart-shaped leaves that form a bold clump at ground level. In early to mid-summer, it produces a magnificent flowering stem that can soar to 3 metres tall, bearing a series of large, trumpet-shaped white flowers with maroon-flushed throats. These fragrant flowers are especially striking against the plant’s lush foliage and are a magnet for pollinators.

This dramatic perennial is ideal for woodland gardens, naturalistic borders, or exotic-style plantings where height and architectural interest are desired. It performs best in sheltered, partially shaded sites with deep, humus-rich soil that remains moist but well-drained throughout the growing season. Plant with 60–90 cm spacing to allow room for its foliage and flowering spike to develop fully.

Mature specimens reach up to 3 metres tall with a spread of around 90 cm.

Trimming – Remove spent flowering stalks after flowering is complete, cutting them down to the base. Allow the main leafy growth to die back naturally in autumn before clearing it.

Deadheading – Not necessary, as the plant dies back after flowering. However, removing seed heads can help conserve energy for bulb offsets.

Fertilising – Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring as growth emerges. A second feed in early summer can support flowering and bulb development.

Watering – Keep soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells and while the plant is establishing. Avoid waterlogging, but do not allow soil to dry out completely.

Pest Control – Watch for slugs and snails, particularly around young shoots—use barriers or organic slug control methods.

Disease Management – Generally trouble-free, though excessive moisture may lead to bulb rot. Ensure good drainage and avoid overhead watering to reduce risk.
