Bergenia cordifolia

Bergenia cordifolia, commonly known as Heartleaf Bergenia, is a robust evergreen perennial valued for its large, rounded, leathery leaves and clusters of bright pink to magenta flowers that emerge on upright stems from late winter through early spring. The foliage often turns bronze or deep red in cooler months, adding year-round interest and colour contrast to shaded garden areas.

Ideal for woodland, cottage, and shaded urban gardens, it works well as groundcover, edging, or mass planting under trees and shrubs where low maintenance and structure are desired.

Thrives in part shade to full shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil, though it tolerates a range of conditions including dry shade once established. Space plants 30–40 cm apart for a dense, effective groundcover.

Mature size: Reaches 30–40 cm high and spreads 40–60 cm wide in a clump-forming habit.

Trimming: Remove spent flower stems after flowering in spring to tidy the plant. In late winter or early spring, trim away any dead, damaged, or tatty leaves to refresh the foliage and encourage new growth.

Deadheading: Remove faded flowers promptly to enhance appearance and prevent self-seeding. This also redirects energy into foliage and root development.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy growth and flowering. In poor soils, a light mid-season feed can be beneficial.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment and during extended dry spells. Once established, Bergenia is moderately drought-tolerant but performs best with occasional deep watering in dry conditions.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Slugs and snails may feed on young or damaged leaves—use traps or barriers if needed.

Disease Management: Low susceptibility to disease, but overly damp or crowded conditions can lead to fungal leaf spots. Ensure good air circulation and remove any discoloured or spotted foliage. Dispose of infected material and apply a fungicide if necessary.
