Astilbe White Gloria
Notify MeAstilbe 'White Gloria' is a compact, clump-forming perennial known for its airy, feathery plumes of pure white flowers that rise above finely divided, dark green foliage. Flowering in early to mid-summer, the upright flower spikes create a soft, luminous effect in shaded garden spaces and are excellent for attracting pollinators. Growing to approximately 50-60 cm high and 40-50 cm wide, it suits woodland, cottage, and shaded border garden styles.
Plant in partial to full shade with moist, humus-rich, free-draining soil. Consistent soil moisture is key-avoid letting it dry out, especially in summer. Space plants 40-50 cm apart for natural spread and airflow. Mulch annually to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Cut back spent flower stems and foliage in late autumn or early spring to tidy up the plant and promote fresh growth.
Trimming: Cut back flower stems after flowering to tidy the plant and encourage neat foliage. In late autumn or early winter, cut back the entire plant to ground level once the foliage has died down.
Deadheading: Not essential, but removing spent flower plumes can improve appearance and prevent self-seeding.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. In poor soils, a light liquid feed in midsummer can help maintain healthy growth and flowering.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and in dry periods-Astilbes prefer consistently moist, well-drained soil. They are not drought-tolerant, so mulching is recommended to retain soil moisture.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally, slugs and snails may feed on young shoots-use organic control methods if needed.
Disease Management: Provide good air circulation and avoid waterlogging to reduce the risk of fungal issues like powdery mildew and crown rot. Remove and dispose of any affected foliage promptly. Ensure soil stays moist but drains well.
