Arenaria Avalanche
Notify MeArenaria montana Avalanche is a compact, low-growing perennial groundcover known for its profusion of pure white flowers that appear in late spring through early summer. A selected cultivar of Arenaria montana, Avalanche stands out for its even denser flowering and neater growth habit, forming a tight mat of bright-green foliage beneath a blanket of crisp white, star-shaped flowers.
Ideal for edging, rockeries or planting between pavers, it thrives in sunny spots with well-drained soil. Suitable for cottage, alpine and Mediterranean-style gardens, it brings long-lasting seasonal interest and requires minimal care once established. Unlike the standard Arenaria montana, Avalanche offers a slightly more compact and floriferous form, making it especially well-suited to smaller garden spaces or containers.
Forms a low mound up to 10–15 cm high and spreads to around 30–40 cm wide.
Trimming: Lightly trim after flowering to maintain its neat, compact form and encourage fresh foliage. Remove any straggly or spent growth to keep the mound dense and tidy.
Deadheading: Regularly remove faded flowers during the flowering period to prolong the display and prevent self-seeding, although seed production is minimal in this cultivar.
Fertilising: Apply a light dose of balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth and flowering. Avoid overfeeding, which can lead to leggy growth.
Watering: Water consistently during the establishment phase and in extended dry spells. Prefers soil that is moist but free-draining—avoid waterlogging, particularly in container settings.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though keep an eye out for slugs or snails, particularly in damp or shaded areas. Use pet-safe bait or traps if necessary.
Disease Management: Susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils. Plant in well-drained locations and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal issues. Trim back any foliage showing signs of rot or mould.
