Ajuga reptans Alba

Ajuga reptans Alba is a low-growing, spreading perennial ground cover known for its glossy green foliage and upright spikes of pure white flowers that appear in mid to late spring. The bright floral display contrasts beautifully with the dense mat of leaves, creating a fresh and elegant look in shaded areas. With a spreading habit reaching around 10-15 cm high and 40-60 cm wide, it’s ideal for woodland, cottage, and low-maintenance garden styles.

Thrives in partial to full shade with moist, well-draining soil, though it will tolerate some sun if kept evenly moist. Space plants 30-40 cm apart to allow for natural spreading. Excellent for suppressing weeds and stabilising soil on slopes or under trees. Cut back flower spikes after flowering to maintain a tidy appearance.

Trimming: Trim back flower spikes after flowering to maintain a tidy appearance and prevent excessive self-seeding. In spring or autumn, you can also lightly cut back runners if the plant spreads beyond its intended area.

Deadheading: Not essential, but removing spent flower spikes can improve appearance and reduce unwanted spread.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering. In poor soils, a light mid-season top-up may be beneficial.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment and in dry periods. Ajuga prefers moist, well-drained soil and does not tolerate prolonged dryness or waterlogging.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, though slugs and snails may nibble on young growth. Use organic deterrents or traps if needed.

Disease Management: Watch for crown rot and powdery mildew in humid or poorly ventilated conditions. Avoid overcrowding, ensure good drainage, and remove any affected foliage promptly to prevent spread.
