Ajuga Port Wine

Ajuga reptans Port Wine is a striking groundcover featuring deep burgundy foliage that holds its rich colour year-round, accented by spires of blue-purple flowers in late spring. This hardy perennial thrives in shaded areas, making it ideal for adding colour and texture to borders, woodland gardens, or as an underplanting for shrubs. Its spreading habit also makes it effective for erosion control on slopes or banks.

Well-suited to cottage gardens, contemporary spaces, and shaded courtyard designs. Plant in partial to full shade with moist, well-draining soil. Space plants 20–30 cm apart to allow for their spreading nature. Flowers appear from late spring into early summer, adding a seasonal burst of contrast.

Grows to a mature height of 10–15 cm and spreads up to 40 cm, forming a dense, colourful mat over time.

Trimming: Trim back spent flowering spikes after the flowering season to encourage fresh growth. In spring, remove damaged or dead foliage to maintain a tidy appearance.

Deadheading: Deadhead regularly during the flowering period to prolong flowering and prevent self-seeding if not desired.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy growth. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to excessive foliage at the expense of flowers.

Watering: Water thoroughly during dry periods, especially when establishing the plant. Ajuga prefers evenly moist soil but can tolerate short periods of dryness once established.

Pest Control: Watch for slugs and snails, which can damage leaves. Use organic deterrents such as crushed eggshells or iron phosphate pellets if infestations occur.

Disease Management: Ajuga can be prone to crown rot in poorly drained soils. Ensure proper drainage and avoid overwatering. Look out for wilting or browning foliage as early signs of rot, and remove affected plants promptly.
