Sophora molloyi is a compact evergreen New Zealand native valued for its fine, glossy foliage and bright yellow, pendulous flowers. Flowering from late winter to early spring, its nectar-rich blooms attract tūī and bellbirds, adding movement and sound to the garden.
Ideal as a feature plant or in mixed native borders, it also suits coastal and low-maintenance gardens, whether formal or naturalistic in style. Prefers full sun and well-drained soil, and tolerates drought, wind, and coastal exposure once established. Space 1.5 to 2 metres apart in group plantings. Typically reaches 2 to 4 metres tall with a slightly spreading form and year-round visual appeal.
Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a tidy, compact shape and encourage dense branching. Remove any dead or damaged wood as needed.
Fertilising: Apply a low-phosphorus, slow-release fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth, especially in poor soils.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though young plants may occasionally be targeted by caterpillars. Hand-remove or treat with a natural insecticide if necessary.
