Pseudopanax laetus. A very attractive native, clump-forming flax with arching, broad, sword-like leaves in tones of bronze-green with pink margins that gradually fade to cream. Overall has a pink tone so nice to combine with grey or burgundy foliage. Plant in sun or semi-shade. Hardy, vigorous and evergreen. 1.5 x 1 m.. Five Finger. Black fruits appear from February which attract birds. Tolerates wind exposure and shade. Protect from heavy frosts. Evergreen. 4m x 3m.
Trimming: Trim lightly as needed to remove dead, damaged, or misplaced growth and to maintain the desired shape. Pseudopanax laetus does not need heavy routine pruning, though it responds well to shaping if required.
Deadheading: Deadheading is not usually necessary. Spent flower heads can be removed for tidiness, but this is mainly cosmetic rather than essential for plant health. Pseudopanax laetus also carries fruit that is attractive to birds, so it is often left on the plant.
Fertilising: Feed in spring with compost or a balanced slow-release fertiliser to support steady, healthy growth. An additional light feed during the growing season can be helpful on poorer soils.
Watering: Water regularly while the plant is establishing and during extended dry periods. Once established it is fairly adaptable, but it performs best with consistent moisture and can struggle if soils become very dry for long periods.
Pest control: Pseudopanax laetus is generally not troubled by serious pests, but inspect foliage and stems for common sap-sucking insects such as scale. Treat early with horticultural oil or an appropriate insect control if needed.
Disease management: The main issue to watch for is root rot in poorly drained or overly wet soil. Signs can include stunted growth, leaf drop, yellowing, and an overall sickly appearance. Ensure good drainage, avoid overwatering, and remove badly affected material promptly, as root rot is often difficult to treat once advanced.
