Pseudopanax crassifolium, commonly known as Lancewood, is a distinctively narrow-growing tree with a tall, erect trunk. Its unique appeal lies in the long, narrow juvenile leaves that dangle from the main trunk, giving the tree a somewhat primitive appearance. Over time, often after many years, this foliage transitions to form a compact head of leaves, creating a stark contrast to its earlier form. Lancewood provides a striking focal point for locations with limited space where a hardy, dramatic tree is desired. It's quite similar to Pseudopanax ferox, but the leaves of Lancewood are less prominently toothed. In a span of 10 years, Pseudopanax crassifolium can achieve a height of 4 metres and a spread of 2 metres, showcasing an impressive growth rate

Trimming: Little trimming is usually needed for Pseudopanax crassifolius unless removing damaged, dead or awkwardly placed lower leaves. For specimen plants, allow its natural upright form to develop.

Fertilising: Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser to support steady growth, especially while the plant is establishing. Avoid overfeeding, as this plant generally performs well in leaner conditions.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Pseudopanax crassifolius is fairly tolerant of dry conditions, but deep watering during extended dry periods will help maintain healthy growth. Ensure the soil drains well and avoid waterlogging.

Pest control: Generally pest resistant, though young plants may occasionally attract scale insects or aphids. Check stems and foliage regularly, and treat infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if needed.

Disease management: This plant is usually trouble free, but poorly drained soil can lead to root rot. Signs include yellowing leaves, wilting and poor vigour. Improve drainage and reduce watering if these symptoms appear. Remove any badly affected material to help prevent further decline.
