Prumnopitys taxifolia, known as Mataī, is a stately New Zealand native conifer prized for its rich cultural and ecological significance. Like its close relative Miro (Prumnopitys ferruginea), Mataī has a distinctive and long-lasting juvenile stage. This early form appears as a dense shrub with a tangle of slender, flexible, divaricating branchlets scattered with pale yellow, brown or off-white leaves. After several years, the adult tree emerges from the top of this juvenile form, eventually shedding the divaricating growth as it matures into a tall tree with a straight trunk and dark green, needle-like foliage.
Mataī is ideal for native gardens, ecological restoration or as a long-term feature tree in large landscapes. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. Once established, it is hardy and adaptable to a range of growing conditions, including light frost.
Over time, Prumnopitys taxifolia can reach a mature height of 20–25 metres with a broad canopy spreading 8–10 metres.
Trimming: Pruning is rarely required but can be done in late winter to remove dead or damaged branches, especially during the juvenile shrub-like stage. Allow the natural transition to adult form without heavy interference to preserve its unique growth habit.
Deadheading: Not applicable, as Mataī does not produce traditional flowers.
Fertilising: Not typically needed in native or restoration settings. If planted in poor soils, apply a low-phosphorus, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth, particularly in juvenile plants.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Mataī is tolerant of light frost and summer dryness but benefits from deep watering during prolonged dry periods, especially in exposed sites.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Monitor for scale insects or aphids on young growth, though infestations are uncommon. Treat with horticultural oil if needed.
Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot in heavy soils. Mulch to retain soil moisture but keep mulch clear of the trunk to avoid fungal issues.
