Plagianthus regius
Plagianthus regius, commonly known as ribbonwood or manatu, is a native New Zealand tree known for its rapid growth and ability to transition from a juvenile form with interlacing, divaricate branches to a mature form with straight, tall growth and broad leaves. The tree is deciduous, featuring clusters of fragrant, white flowers that appear in spring, adding seasonal interest and attracting pollinators.
In the garden, Plagianthus regius is ideal for large spaces where it can be used as a specimen tree, for screening, or as part of a native planting scheme. Its ability to grow in a variety of soil types, including wet conditions, makes it versatile for different landscape designs. Ribbonwood is particularly effective in restoration plantings, windbreaks, or as a background tree in larger garden settings.
Ribbonwood prefers full sun to partial shade and will thrive in moist, well-drained soil. It is adaptable to both dry and damp conditions, making it suitable for a range of environments. For landscape planting, especially when creating a screen or windbreak, spacing of about 2-3m apart is recommended to allow for its wide-reaching canopy.
Trimming: Prune Plagianthus regius in late winter or early spring to maintain its shape and encourage strong growth. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to promote good air circulation.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to excessive growth and potentially weaken the plant.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once established, Plagianthus regius is fairly drought-tolerant but will benefit from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells.
Pest Control: This plant is generally pest-resistant. However, keep an eye out for common pests such as aphids and caterpillars. Treat any infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Disease Management: Plagianthus regius is typically disease-resistant. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal issues. If you notice signs of disease, such as leaf spots or mildew, remove the affected parts and treat with a suitable fungicide if necessary. Ensure the soil has good drainage to prevent root rot.
