Piper excelsum
Piper excelsum, also known as Kawakawa and previously known as Macropiper excelsum, is a small native evergreen tree that typically grows to around 3-5 metres in height. It has large, heart-shaped leaves that are aromatic. Kawakawa is becoming increasingly popular as a tea or culinary spice due to its unique flavour. It can tolerate shade and is frost-tender, so it should be planted in a protected spot.
