Metrosideros Ferris Wheel is a compact, evergreen New Zealand native shrub prized for its striking red brush-like flowers that appear from late spring into summer. The vibrant flowers are framed by dense, glossy green foliage with a tidy, rounded habit, making it an excellent choice for smaller spaces or feature planting.
Ideal for coastal, native, and low-maintenance gardens, Metrosideros Ferris Wheel is well-suited to borders, hedging, container planting, or as a vibrant focal point. It thrives in full sun with free-draining soil and is tolerant of wind, dry conditions, and coastal exposure once established. Space approximately 80 cm to 1 metre apart for hedging or group plantings.
Forms a dense, rounded shrub reaching around 1.5 to 2 metres high and 1.2 to 1.5 metres wide.
Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage dense, bushy growth. Remove any dead or damaged branches. For hedging or topiary, trim as needed to keep the desired form.
Deadheading: Not required, but removing spent flower heads can keep the plant looking tidy and encourage new growth.
Fertilising: Apply a low-phosphorus, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poorer soils or container-grown plants, feed every 6 to 8 weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser during the growing season.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment, especially in the first one to two years. Once established, it is tolerant of dry conditions but will benefit from occasional deep watering during extended dry spells. Ensure the soil drains freely.
Pest Control: Keep an eye out for scale insects and myrtle rust, particularly on new growth. Treat scale with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Remove and dispose of any affected foliage promptly to limit the spread of rust.
Disease Management: Avoid overhead watering and provide good air circulation to reduce the risk of fungal issues. Myrtle rust is the most notable concern - look for yellow-orange spores on young leaves and stems. Prune out infected areas and monitor closely during warm, humid periods.
