Metrosideros bartlettii

Metrosideros bartlettii is a rare and striking New Zealand native tree, known for its clusters of fluffy white flowers that appear in early to mid-summer. The flowers contrast beautifully with its leathery grey-green foliage and pale bark, making it an eye-catching specimen in any garden. This species is endangered in the wild and valued for both its ornamental and conservation significance.

Ideal for native, coastal, and low-maintenance gardens, Metrosideros bartlettii is best used as a feature tree or planted in groups for visual impact. It prefers full sun with free-draining soil and is tolerant of dry conditions and coastal exposure once established. Space approximately 3 to 4 metres apart in larger landscape settings.

Forms a small to medium tree reaching around 5 to 8 metres high and 3 to 4 metres wide.

Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a tidy shape and encourage a strong framework. Remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood, as it may not reshoot reliably.

Deadheading: Not necessary, but removing spent flower heads can improve appearance and help direct energy into new growth.

Fertilising: Apply a low-phosphorus slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In nutrient-poor soils, supplement with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 6 to 8 weeks during the growing season.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment, particularly through the first two summers. Once established, it copes well with dry periods but will benefit from deep watering during prolonged drought. Ensure soil is free-draining.

Pest Control: Monitor for scale insects and psyllids, particularly on new growth. Treat infestations early with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Disease Management: Root rot may occur in poorly drained soils. Signs include wilting and yellowing foliage. Ensure excellent drainage and avoid overwatering. Maintain good airflow around the plant to reduce the risk of fungal disease. Remove and dispose of any affected plant material.
