Leptospermum patersonii is a hardy, evergreen shrub or small tree with aromatic, lemon-scented foliage and small white flowers that appear in spring and early summer. Its upright growth and scented leaves make it suitable for screening, hedging, coastal gardens, and native landscapes.
Plant in full sun with free-draining soil. Tolerates drought, wind, frost, and coastal conditions once established. Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage dense growth. Space plants 1 to 1.5 metres apart for hedging or shelter planting.
Grows to around 3 to 5 metres tall and 2 to 3 metres wide.
Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a tidy shape and promote bushy growth. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood, as recovery may be slow.
Deadheading: Not necessary, but removing spent flowers can enhance appearance and reduce unwanted self-seeding.
Fertilising: Apply a low-phosphorus, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poor soils, a second light feed in mid to late summer may help maintain vigour.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Occasionally monitor for scale or psyllids, particularly on soft new growth, and treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if needed.
Disease Management: Ensure well-drained soil to prevent root rot. Avoid overhead watering, and prune to maintain airflow around the plant. Remove any discoloured or damaged foliage promptly.
