Hebe pinguifolia

Hebe pinguifolia (syn. Veronica pinguifolia), also known as Thick-leaved Speedwell or Disk-leaved Hebe, is a compact, evergreen shrub native to the South Island of New Zealand. It forms a neat, low-growing mound with small, grey-blue leaves and produces masses of white flowers in summer, from December to February. Its subtle colouring and tidy form make it a versatile addition to many garden settings.

Thriving in full sun with well-draining soil, Hebe pinguifolia is ideal for alpine, coastal, and native gardens, as well as rockeries and dry borders. It grows quickly and is highly tolerant of wind, dry soils, and light frost. Plant with 50–60 cm spacing to allow for its spreading habit. At maturity, it reaches around 50 cm tall and 1 metre wide.

Trimming: Lightly trim after flowering to maintain its dense, mounded shape and prevent legginess, avoiding cuts into old wood as regrowth may be limited.

Deadheading: Remove spent flower heads as they fade to enhance appearance and encourage a tidier form, though deadheading is not essential for overall performance.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy growth and summer flowering, particularly if planted in nutrient-poor soils.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and needs minimal watering, even in dry conditions.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, though occasional aphids or scale insects may appear on young shoots; manage infestations with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap as needed.

Disease Management: Hebe pinguifolia is mostly disease-free but can develop fungal leaf spots or root rot in poorly drained or overly shaded conditions. Ensure free-draining soil and avoid overhead watering to maintain plant health.
