Hebe pinguifolia Pagei

Hebe pinguifolia 'Pagei' is a dense, mat-forming evergreen shrub native to New Zealand, prized for its small, thick, blue-grey leaves and neat, spreading habit. In late spring to early summer, it produces short spikes of white flowers that contrast softly against the foliage. With a low, ground-hugging form reaching around 20-30 cm high and spreading 60-80 cm wide, it’s ideal for rockeries, retaining walls, edging, and coastal or native garden styles.

Plant in full sun with free-draining soil. Tolerates wind, drought, and coastal exposure once established. Space plants 40-50 cm apart for effective ground coverage. Minimal maintenance is required-light pruning after flowering helps maintain shape and density. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils, especially in winter. A tough, attractive ground cover that provides year-round texture and performs well in exposed conditions.

Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain its low, spreading form and encourage dense growth. Remove any dead or damaged stems in late winter or early spring. Avoid hard pruning into old wood, as it may not regenerate.

Deadheading: Not required, but removing spent flower spikes can help improve appearance and promote a tidy habit.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In nutrient-poor soils, a second light feed in mid-summer can support strong, compact growth.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Hebe pinguifolia ‘Pagei’ is drought-tolerant and prefers free-draining soil. Avoid prolonged wet conditions, particularly in winter.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though aphids and scale may appear occasionally. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.

Disease Management: Provide good airflow to reduce the risk of fungal issues. Avoid overhead watering and remove any yellowing or diseased foliage promptly. Ensure soil is well-drained to prevent root rot.
