Hebe 'Pewter Dome' is a compact, evergreen shrub noted for its tight, dome-shaped habit and small, silvery-grey foliage that gives it a soft, pewter-like appearance. While flowering is minimal and inconspicuous, its year-round colour and finely textured foliage make it an excellent choice for structural planting. Growing to approximately 30-40 cm high and 50-60 cm wide, it is ideal for rock, alpine, coastal, and contemporary garden styles.
Plant in full sun with free-draining soil. Tolerates wind, dry conditions, and coastal exposure once established. Space plants 40-50 cm apart for edging or mass planting. Requires very little maintenance-light trimming in late winter or early spring will help maintain its dense, rounded form. Avoid overly wet soils in winter. A hardy, low-maintenance shrub perfect for adding structure, contrast, and silvery tone to exposed or compact spaces.
Trimming: Lightly trim after flowering to maintain its dense, rounded form. Remove any dead, damaged, or leggy growth in late winter or early spring. Avoid cutting back into old wood, as it may not reshoot.
Deadheading: Not essential, but removing spent flower spikes can help keep the plant looking tidy and may encourage light repeat flowering.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poor soils, a light top-up in mid-summer can help maintain healthy, compact growth.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Hebe ‘Pewter Dome’ is low-maintenance and drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells. Ensure free-draining soil.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free, but monitor for aphids and scale insects-treat early with neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal leaf spot and root rot. Remove any diseased or discoloured foliage promptly and avoid planting in heavy, poorly drained soil.
