Hebe odora Nana

Hebe odora 'Nana' is a compact, evergreen shrub known for its dense, finely textured foliage and tidy, rounded form. The small, bright green leaves create a neat appearance year-round, and although it produces only occasional small white flowers, its strength lies in its structure and foliage. Growing to around 30-40 cm high and 40-50 cm wide, it’s perfect for edging, low hedging, rockeries, and coastal or formal garden styles.

Plant in full sun to light shade with free-draining soil. Tolerates wind, dry conditions, and coastal exposure once established. Space plants 30-40 cm apart for dense coverage or border edging. Requires little maintenance-light trimming in late winter or early spring helps maintain its compact shape. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils in winter. A tough, low-maintenance shrub ideal for structured plantings or exposed sites.

Trimming: Lightly trim after flowering to maintain a neat, compact shape. This dwarf variety benefits from occasional light pruning to encourage dense growth. Remove any dead or damaged stems in late winter or early spring.

Deadheading: Not essential, but removing spent flower spikes can tidy the plant and occasionally encourage light repeat flowering.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poor or sandy soils, a second light feed in mid-summer can help maintain healthy foliage and growth.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Hebe odora 'Nana' is relatively drought-tolerant but will benefit from occasional watering during prolonged dry spells. Ensure well-drained soil to avoid root issues.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Aphids and scale insects may occasionally appear-treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed.

Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation to reduce the risk of fungal leaf spot and root rot. Avoid overhead watering and remove any yellowing or diseased foliage promptly. Plant in free-draining soil and avoid heavy, wet sites.
