Trimming: Remove old, yellowing or damaged fronds as needed to keep the plant tidy and highlight fresh growth. Cut fronds off cleanly close to the trunk without damaging emerging croziers. Remove dead material from around the base if required.

Fertilising: Apply compost, leaf mould or a gentle slow-release fertiliser in spring to support healthy frond production. Avoid heavy feeding, as tree ferns prefer steady, modest nutrition.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase to keep the root zone consistently moist. This fern prefers damp conditions, so continue watering during dry periods and in hot weather, especially around the trunk and crown where it absorbs moisture.

Pest control: Check young fronds for slug and snail damage, and watch for scale insects if the plant is stressed. Use traps, barriers or hand removal for slugs and snails, and treat scale with horticultural oil if needed.

Disease management: Poor drainage or prolonged dryness can weaken the plant and lead to crown or root problems. Signs to watch for include browning fronds, collapse of new growth or soft, rotting tissue around the crown. Remove damaged fronds, keep the crown moist but not waterlogged, and ensure the plant is grown in a sheltered spot with good drainage.
